Stavenisse: A hidden gem in Zeeland

Stavenisse is a hidden gem tucked away on the eastern tip of the island of Tholen in the province of Zeeland. It’s the kind of place where time slows down, the air smells of salt, and the horizon seems to go on forever.

Whether you’re planning a quiet holiday or are just curious about this corner of the Netherlands, here’s everything you need to know.

A glimpse of history

Stavenisse has a resilient soul. Much of its history is defined by its relationship with the water.

The 1953 flood

This is the most significant event in the village’s modern history. Stavenisse was hit incredibly hard by the North Sea flood, and a monument near the village stands as a somber reminder of that night.

Old manor roots

You can still see traces of Stavenisse Castle (built in the 17th century), although only the old foundations and the garden remain today.

Description & Atmosphere

Walking through Stavenisse feels like a real relaxation (ontspanning). It is a traditional village in Zeeland, characterized by its charming harbor, historic windmills and white-painted houses. It is not a busy tourist trap; it is a place for a rustic (peaceful) escape, where the primary soundtrack is the sound of wind and water.

Nature & Outdoor Activities

The village is surrounded by the Oosterschelde National Park, the largest national park in the Netherlands.

Diving

Stavenisse is world-famous among divers. The water is clear and full of life, including anemones, crabs and even seahorses.

Cycling & Hiking

The dikes offer endless paths for a fietstocht (bicycle ride) with panoramic views of the sea on one side and lush farmland on the other.

Birdwatching

The nearby mudflats are a haven for migratory birds.

Typical foods

You can't visit Zeeland without tasting the region's "salty gold".

Local specialties

Zeeland mussels: Often served in a large pot with white wine and vegetables.

Oysters and lobsters: Freshly caught from the Oosterschelde.

Zeeuwse Bolus: A sweet, sticky cinnamon pastry that is a must with your morning coffee.

Schouwen-Duiveland Wine: Surprisingly, the nearby vineyards produce excellent crisp white wines that go perfectly with local fish and shellfish.

Shops and festivals

Stavenisse is small, so shopping is more about local flavor than high street brands.

Local shops

You'll find small shops and farm shops nearby selling fresh potatoes, strawberries and cheese.

Festivals

The village comes alive during Havenfeesten (Harbour Days) with boat trips, music and local crafts. In summer, keep an eye out for local braderieën (street markets) where you can find handmade Zeelandic goods.
